Police Payslip Explained: Pay, Overtime and Pension

A September pay award, an overtime claim and an April pension change can affect different lines on a police payslip. Here is how to check the basic salary, trace extra payments and reconcile the deductions.

2026/27 tax; police officer pay and 2015 pension scheme in England and Wales

Quick answer

Match basic pay to your rank, pay point and effective date, then check overtime and allowances separately. The England and Wales 2015 pension contribution structure changed on 1 April 2026: the band normally uses actual pensionable pay from the previous scheme year. Pension reduces Income Tax, but ordinary member contributions do not reduce National Insurance.

Start with rank, pay point and the date of the change

Read the annual basic salary on your pay notification before comparing net pay. Record your rank, pay point, progression date, working hours and any location allowance. A promotion or increment can change the basic rate independently of the annual award.

The Home Office’s July 2026 statement confirms a 3.5% consolidated award from 1 September 2026 for officers in England and Wales. That effective date is different from the start of the tax year on 6 April.

For an unchanged, full monthly salary, annual basic pay ÷ 12 is a useful first check. A mid-month start, unpaid absence, change of hours or promotion needs the force’s calculation for the affected dates.

Constable pay scale from September 2026

These are full-time annual basic rates for constables appointed on or after 1 April 2013, in England and Wales, from 1 September 2026. Allowances and overtime are additional. Earlier appointments and other ranks need their own published table.

Separate overtime, allowances, expenses and arrears

Police payslip checks beyond basic pay
EntryRecord to compare
Overtime or rest-day paymentApproved duty, hours, applicable entitlement, rate and payroll cut-off
Unsocial-hours or other allowanceQualifying duties and the current determination or force explanation
London or South East paymentYour posting, eligibility and the allowance shown separately from national basic pay
ExpensesApproved claim and payroll’s tax treatment; an expense repayment is not automatically basic salary
Back payOld and new rates, covered dates, hours and any related pension adjustment

A payment can relate to duties worked earlier than the month it reaches your bank. Compare the duty dates and claim cut-off before treating a missing line as an incorrect rate. Ask which additions are pensionable rather than applying your pension percentage to every gross-pay line.

If the September award arrives later, request an arrears breakdown. Our backdated pay guide shows how gross arrears can produce a smaller bank payment after deductions.

Officers up to and including chief inspector who pay eligible uniform-upkeep costs themselves may be able to claim tax relief using HMRC’s £140 annual flat-rate expense: at a 20% tax rate, that would save £28 a year. You cannot claim if your employer pays all the costs; check HMRC’s eligibility rules, including free laundering, before claiming, and note that the worked example below excludes this relief.

The police pension contribution bands changed in April 2026

The 2026 member-contribution regulations changed the England and Wales 2015 scheme from 1 April 2026. The full member rates below apply to the whole pensionable payment, rather than just the slice above a band boundary.

2015 scheme full member contribution rates from 1 April 2026
Relevant pay used to choose the bandContribution rate
£37,035 or less12.88%
More than £37,035 but less than £79,58813.88%
£79,588 or more14.22%

The Home Office explanation says the band normally uses actual pensionable pay from the previous scheme year, rather than full-time equivalent pay. Joining or returning after a long unpaid absence needs the scheme’s special rules. Reduced member rates also exist for particular circumstances; ask your administrator if one applies.

Compare the pension deduction with this period’s pensionable pay, using the rate payroll has established. The pay used to choose the band and the pay receiving that percentage are different checks.

Worked example: take-home from an annualised £52,015 basic salary

Illustration: the September 2026 point-7 rate is held constant for a whole year to show the deductions. This is not a claim that every point-7 officer earns that salary throughout 2026/27. Assume England, the full £12,570 Personal Allowance, category A NI, all pay pensionable and a confirmed 13.88% full member rate. There are no allowances, overtime, student loans, salary sacrifice, other income or other deductions.

Annual police take-home illustration using 2026/27 tax rules
ItemAnnual amount
Gross basic salary£52,015.00
Pension: £52,015 × 13.88%, rounded£7,219.68
Income Tax: (£52,015 − £7,219.68 − £12,570) × 20%£6,445.06
Employee NI: £37,700 × 8% + £1,745 × 2%£3,050.90
Take-home after these deductions£35,299.36

That is £2,941.61 a month on average. It is an annual planning estimate: actual monthly NI uses monthly thresholds, while PAYE depends on the code, basis, earlier pay and rounding. Ordinary pension contributions reduce Income Tax here, but NI still uses pay before the pension deduction.

Check the changed line before asking for a correction

If gross pay is wrong, send force payroll the affected dates, pay-point notification and duty or allowance record. If the pension rate looks wrong, request the scheme name, relevant-pay calculation and full or reduced rate applied. Your pension administrator can explain scheme records that payroll cannot resolve.

For a PAYE query, compare the code and cumulative or M1/W1 basis with HMRC’s record. A large overtime or arrears month can increase deductions without changing the code. Student loans also need the correct plan and pay-period earnings; compare them using our student-loan guide.

In the calculator, model ordinary member contributions using net pay pension relief and the correct pensionable amount. It does not select a police pension band or determine allowance eligibility. Our extra-pay tool can help compare a prospective payment once you know those assumptions.

What to check

  • This guide covers police officers in England and Wales. Police staff, Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate pay or pension arrangements.
  • A national pay award and progression to a new pay point are separate changes.
  • Not every extra payment has the same pension or tax treatment as basic pay.
  • Check the pension reference year as well as the percentage printed on this month’s payslip.

What to do next

  • Keep your pay-point confirmation, duty record, approved claims and two recent payslips together.
  • Ask payroll to identify the pay period, rate and pensionable amount behind each queried line.
  • For a pension-band query, request the relevant-pay figure and reference period used.

Common questions

Which police pay scale does this guide cover?
The basic-pay table is for England and Wales constables appointed on or after 1 April 2013, at September 2026 rates. Earlier appointments, other ranks, police staff, Scotland and Northern Ireland need their own pay arrangements checked.
Why can my police pension band differ from this month’s salary?
The England and Wales 2015 scheme changed from April 2026. The band normally uses actual pensionable pay from the previous scheme year, with special rules for joining or returning members. Apply the confirmed rate to this period’s pensionable pay and ask payroll for the reference calculation.
Do ordinary police pension deductions reduce National Insurance?
No. Ordinary member contributions receive Income Tax relief through payroll, while employee NI uses pay before that pension deduction. Confirm pensionable pay separately from total gross earnings.
