A simple exercise for a pay workshop

An example payslip shows £2,500 gross pay, £311 PAYE, £116 National Insurance and £100 pension. Subtracting those deductions leaves £1,973. That checks the arithmetic; it does not establish whether the tax or pension deduction is correct. Ask what information would be needed to check each line: pay period, tax code and basis, pension method and earnings.

Keep real payslips and personal identifiers in your employer’s private payroll channel. Our checker uses entered figures to produce an estimate and an editable question; it cannot see the employer’s records or a full year’s payroll history.
